1. Can I vote absentee?

You can vote absentee in Virginia if you are a registered voter in Virginia.

Early Voting In-Person

• You can vote early at our office beginning 45 days before Election Day and ending the Saturday before Election Day. 
• You do not have to have a reason or fill out an application to vote early. 
• You must provide your name and address and show an acceptable form of ID. 
• Accessible equipment and curbside voting is available upon request.

Absentee Voting by Mail

• Apply online to vote by mail. 
• Print and complete a paper absentee application form then submit your application to our office by mail, fax, or email.
• Military and overseas voters can find specific information regarding absentee voting here.

2. How do I get the absentee ballot?

Call, write, or stop by any voter’s registrar’s office in Virginia and ask for an absentee application or visit the Virginia Department of Elections.

3. When can I apply for an absentee ballot?

An application for an absentee ballot may be accepted the later of:

• 12 months before an election
• The day following any election held in the twelfth month prior to the election in which the applicant is applying to vote

If you are applying to vote by mail, the registrar must receive your application 11 days prior to the election. The deadline to early vote in-person is 5 p.m. on the Saturday before the election.

4. How do I vote the ballot?

You will receive instructions with the ballot. Vote the ballot as soon as you receive it and put it in the envelope provided. You may deliver it in person or mail it. The electoral board must receive your ballot at Revercomb Building, Suite 102 by 7 p.m. on Election Day. 

Important: First class mail is not one day delivery. Please place your marked ballot in the mail at least 7 days prior to the election in order for our office to receive it before the election.

5. If I am put in the hospital shortly before the election, can I vote?

Yes, if you are a registered voter in Virginia and,

• You are put in the hospital on or after the Thursday before an election.
• You go to the hospital in the two weeks before election and your condition prevents you from requesting an application sooner than the Thursday before the election.

Call your voter registrar before noon on the day before the election ask for an emergency absentee ballot application. You will need someone age 18 or older to pick up the application for you and return it completed.
